Musings: Shopping when losing vs gaining weight

As someone how has spent most of their life losing, then gaining (tbh I’ve spent most of my life gaining or maintaining at a heavy weight *sobs*) I have experienced shopping at both a lower, and higher weight.

And let me tell you, they’re two very different experiences.

Big spoiler that, right?

But seriously, when you’re losing weight shopping trips are the best thing since sliced bread (ooo, bread….) and when gaining weight it’s a harsh reality of holy crap balls what am I doing to myself, let me console myself with a slice of cake.

Oh life!

I’m currently in the middle of these (more towards the gaining ‘cause, lol, I can’t seem to shift these lbs atm) so thought I’d write a little blog post so we can all laugh/cry together.

Sharing is caring after-all.

Trying on clothes in a size you think you might be able to fit into:

When losing weight:

*Excited voice* - Wait, what? The hanger must be lying; surely, I’m not this size.

When gaining weight

*trying not to cry* - Wait, what? The hanger must be lying; surely I’m not this size.

Looking at something you think/hope might fit:

When losing weight:

*Excited voice* - Oooo, I wonder if I’ll be able to squeeze into this…

When gaining weight:

*Nervous voice*- Hmmm, I wonder if I’ll be able to squeeze into this…

When clothes you bought a couple of weeks ago are too big/small for you now:

When losing weight:

*Annoyed, but not really, voice* - I only bought these two weeks ago and now they don’t fit anymore!

When gaining weight:

*Gutted, might cry voice* - I only bought these two weeks ago and now they don’t fit anymore!

Looking longingly at ‘skinny chick shops:

When losing weight:

Ooo, maybe I’ll just give it a go! Wait, what? Something from Topshop fits me? I must buy it immediately.

When gaining weight:

*looks at Topshop longingly* - one day we’ll meet again, I promise… *wipes tear from eyes*

When looking at clothes that are ‘in fashion’:

When losing weight:

Maybe I’ll just try it on… OMG it fits! I can finally be cool like the people I see on Instagram. *takes 5 gajillion pictures before hanging it back up ‘cause lol you have no money ‘cause you’ve bought too many clothes…*

When gaining weight:

*Tries on clothes, then tries not to have a mental breakdown when you realise you look like a whale at a fancy dress party…*

When debating whether to buy something or not:

When losing weight:

Am I buying this because I like it, or because I’m happy it fits?

When gaining weight:

Am I buying this because I like it, or just because it covers my fat arse?

Let me know what other delightful comparisons I'm missing out on!
